Whether you’re headed to Mexico, Malaga or The Maldives on your next trip, we’re betting the perfect bikini is pretty high up on your wish list this year. The sun has seemingly gone into hibernation this spring, especially in the UK (sorry guys), so you’re going to want to soak up as much sunny vitamin D as possible while you can. Hence the two piece.

It’s really important when picking out your bikini that you bear in mind not only what cuts, styles and prints are in fashion this summer – although we will keep you up to speed, don’t worry – but also how this year’s trends will work for you and your body shape.

Summer 2013 Swimwear Trends

Vintage inspired swimwear is absolutely huge for 2013 and so flattering for hourglass figures, so it’s time to channel your inner pin-up girl. Don’t go overboard though, the trick to keeping this look current is to go for a modern cut with a playful print or, conversely, a vintage style executed in a contemporary geometric print. You could even update an old bikini top by pairing it with high waisted bikini briefs, to add a touch of glamour to an otherwise modern look.

Freya do a great range of vintage inspired pieces featuring halter-necks, sweetheart necklines and cutesy frills. The brand’s main site sometimes has limited stock in larger cup sizes though so for those of you already endowed with Monroe like curves you might want to visit a specialist store like UK based Bras-Galore.com who have loads of Freya bikinis in a range of styles and sizes.

Vintage can definitely work for petite girls too, padded cups are a great way to create curves and ruffles are the ultimate tool in adding volume to your bust.

For 2013, digital prints have taken on a whole new level. Everything from tees to evening-wear are emblazoned with enhanced photography this season and bikinis are no exception. You’ve got to be pretty confident to pull this trend off but when it works, it looks amazing. Check out our post on Australian swimwear brand We are Handsome’s amazing wildlife themed collection, The Crossing.

If you’re more of a classic kind of girl then you can’t go wrong with Calvin Klein swimwear whose clean lines and sculpted silhouettes turn us green with envy. Particularly perfect for petite girls, since their sizes, alas, stop at a D cup.

Clashing prints have taken the fashion world by storm lately and it’s seeped into our swimwear this summer. Mismatching tops and bottoms creates a really interesting look and oozes a sense of fun. Emphasize the area you love the most with a bold print and draw attention away from problem areas whilst giving off the air that you’re simply too cool to properly match.

This also means we can get varied wears out of different bikinis, which definitely means you can spend more, right?
